The film will be preceded by a reception beginning at 5:30 p.m.and followed by a brief conversation among sea level rise experts and the audience. The film will begin at 6:30 p.m.
With our passion to live by the ocean, we’ve put ourselves in a tough spot. To maintain our property lines, we have become dependent on the practice of piling sand on top of sand on top of water to hold back a rising sea. Yet beach replenishment, in the blunt words of a coastal resident, is “just a Band Aid on a hemorrhage,” which only distracts us from dealing with the challenges of coastal development. These federal beach replenishment projects are paid for with 65% federal, 26.25% state and 8.75% local dollars. But with a federal budget under fire, money may soon dry up for these communities. Are there other approaches to protect our coasts?
The film interviews scientists, engineers, policymakers and people who love living near the sea to explore what rapidly rising sea levels and more frequent superstorms will mean for Americans living on or near the coasts.
Speakers will include Director Ben Kalina, Dr. Marcia McNutt, Editor-in-Chief of Science magazine, Steve Ellis, VP of Taxpayers for Common Sense and Kathleen White of the Army Corps of Engineers (invited). Dianne Saenz of Climate Nexus will moderate the conversation.
